Debra Swangin, a native of Washington, DC, is currently a student at The Goodwill Excel Center (GEC) and will graduate in July 2021. She is originally from Northwest Washington, DC and currently lives in Northeast. Ms. Swangin is a mother to six adult children who she has watched succeed in both college and their careers. Her children are her inspiration and her motivation. Ms. Swangin has always wanted to work in the medical sector, and this has guided her journey. Ms. Swangin is certified as a Medical Administrative Assistant, Medical Assistant, and a Phlebotomist. Ms. Swangin’s goal is to work in a hospital as she has a passion for helping others who are in need and in crisis and being able to bring joy to people’s life on their hardest days. She has worked on the Hospice Unit at Providence Hospital and this solidified her desire to work in a hospital setting and with patients during some of their most difficult times. In September 2019, Ms. Swangin made the commitment to return to school and complete her high school diploma by enrolling at GEC. She discovered GEC through a friend and has known Goodwill of Greater of Washington through their workforce development programming and felt it was a perfect opportunity. Since returning to school, Ms. Swangin has been a leader in the community and a role model and mentor for many of the younger GEC students. Ms. Swangin is a Student Ambassador and Student Board Member at GEC. She has also earned several school awards and has been named to the Honor Roll list multiple terms in a row. In July, when Ms. Swangin walks across the stage, she will be months away from turning 60 and steps away from her goal of obtaining employment in her dream field.
